The book takes one to a totally different era - of tea parlors, geishas , kimonas n fascinating Japanese culture n traditions. It tells the making of a geisha, the female companion, a maitre d' art. No pain, no gain. Thus the story is naturally heart rending and touching but not spell bounding. All the same, it cocoons a beautiful love story too.
No, I haven't seen the movie starring 'The crouching tiger, hidden dragon' Zhang Ziyi and 'The silver hawk' Michelle Yeoh. Waiting.....
