Train to Pakistan - Kushwant Singh

Set in a small village in Punjab, this grim n gripping historical tale illustrates the aftermath of partition, communal riots, massacres, exodus n plight of refugees. Was it this easy to round up and dump a herd of people to Pakistan? Was it this easy to murder n parcel out a trainload of people to India? Gross.

A must read for the proud patriots who celebrate the freedom struggle saga of India.

Khuswant Singh - the writer often accredited with revolving his writing around wine and women, certainly has masterpieces like A Train to Pakistan to his credit. Remember those utterly forgettable jokes (Khuswant Singh's Joke Book) and the womanizing stories (The Company of Women)?
A true heart wrenching (and at times heart warming) story of partition,Brilliant character-sketching and a water tight plot line take the reader through various phases of partition. A must read for connoisseurs of Indian writing in English.
I wish Singh kept creating works of art similar to his debut novel, rather than going the "Company of Women" route..
